Flat Edge vs Tegular Edge Ceiling Tiles: What’s the Difference?

When it comes to suspended ceilings, the choice of tile isn’t just about the material or size: it’s also about the edge. The two most common options are flat edge and tegular edge (also known as reveal edge) ceiling tiles.

While they may seem similar at a glance, the difference in how they sit in the grid can dramatically affect the look, performance, and even cost of your ceiling system.

At Granmore, we’ve been designing and installing suspended ceilings for over 38 years. Whether you’re an architect, contractor or facilities manager, understanding the differences between flat and tegular tiles will help you make the right decision for your project.

What Are Flat Edge Ceiling Tiles?

Flat edge ceiling tiles (also referred to as ‘square edge’) sit flush within the visible grid system of a suspended ceiling. When installed, the face of the tile is level with the grid, creating a uniform, flat surface across the entire ceiling.

Key Features:

  • Flush finish with grid
  • Clean, minimalist look
  • Quick and easy to install
  • Typically more budget-friendly

Flat edge tiles are a practical choice for offices, classrooms, warehouses, and anywhere that prioritises practicality, speed of installation, or cost-effectiveness over a premium aesthetic. They’re also an ideal option for DIY replacement projects, as they’re easy to remove and swap out when needed.

What Are Tegular Edge Ceiling Tiles?

Tegular edge (or reveal edge) ceiling tiles are designed with a stepped edge. This enables them to drop slightly below the grid line. This creates a shadow effect, giving the ceiling a sense of depth and dimensionality that flat tiles lack.

Key Features:

  • Recessed below the grid
  • Creates a shadow line around each tile
  • More sophisticated appearance
  • Slightly more complex to install

They’re often found in high-end offices, retail environments, boardrooms, and commercial spaces where aesthetics matter. The visual effect of the reveal edge helps break up the grid and adds a sense of refinement.

Differences in Appearance and Design

The most noticeable difference is in appearance. Flat edge tiles give a streamlined, practical look: perfect for spaces where function comes first. Tegular tiles, on the other hand, deliver a higher-spec finish that’s popular in interior design schemes seeking more character.

Like recessed lighting, tegular tiles add a depth and polish to what might otherwise be a plain ceiling.

At Granmore, we often advise clients to match the edge style to the tone of the space. A supermarket or storeroom? Go flat. A showroom or reception area? Consider tegular.

How the Costs Compare

There’s usually a cost difference between the two types, but it’s not just about the tile itself.

  • Flat edge tiles are cheaper per unit and quicker to install, meaning lower labour costs.
  • Tegular edge tiles may cost slightly more and require more precise installation, which could increase time and labour.

However, the higher-end finish of tegular tiles can make your space appear more distinguished. This is important in spaces where the appearance matters to clients or customers.

At Granmore, we supply both tiles direct from our warehouse near Manchester, so whether you need cost-effective flat panels or high-end reveal tiles, we’ve got you covered.

The Installation Process

Both types of tile fit into a standard suspended ceiling grid, usually 600 x 600mm or 1200 x 600mm. But their installation methods do differ slightly.

  • Flat edge tiles drop directly into the grid: quick, easy, and highly accessible for maintenance.
  • Tegular edge tiles require the tile to rest on a stepped ledge in the grid. This means more care is needed during fitting to ensure it’s consistently aligned.

It’s also worth noting that tegular tiles can subtly make the height of the ceiling seem lower. This is because their face sits below the grid. This is typically negligible, but in spaces with low ceilings, it may be a factor.
